About World War 3

about world war 3 illustrated

Founded in 1980 by Seth Tobocman and Peter Kuper, World War 3 Illustrated is a labor of love, run by a collective of artists working with the unified goal of creating a home for political comics, graphics and stories.

The rotating editorial board has included over the years along with Seth and Peter, Sabrina Jones, Scott Cunningham, Kevin Pyle, Nicole Schulman, Eric Drooker, Susan Wilmarth, Christopher Cardinale, Ryan Inzana, Paula Hewitt, and Chuck Sperry among many others. The magazine could never have survived without this collective effort and the contribution of so many other artists and writers who have donated their talents. In the hierarchy of the magazine editors and contributors receive the same pay—a magazine they’ve helped build. Only the printers and distributors are paid, all profits go into producing the next issue.

WW3 isn’t about a war that may happen, it is about the ongoing wars our so-called leaders have been waging all our lives around the world and on our very own doorsteps. WW3 also illuminates the war we wage on each other and sometimes the one taking place in our own brains.

If we had a manifesto (which we don’t) it might say if you’re going to talk about changing society, a magazine’s not a bad place to start. WW3 has functioned as a microcosm of the the kind of society we’d like to see. Content is valued over style and ideas are not regarded for their popularity, but for their substance. Artists are given a forum to reach an audience with their work and the opportunity to interact and examine their concepts in a group setting.

WW3 contributors range from first-timers to veteran activists and many artists whose first published pieces appeared in our pages were launched into their careers. Though numerous contributors have had their work appear in all areas of art from museums to major magazines they continue to return to WW3 to find one of the few uncensored venues for their art.

World War 3 has served as a document of our collective history—including many aspects ignored by the mainstream press—from the shadow cast by Ronald Reagan to Iran-Contra, the Tompkins Square Riot, the Gulf War, genocide in Bosnia, 9/11, the invasion of Iraq, and the ongoing corruption of the Bush administration. We’ve illustrated personal subjects from race to religion to sexual relations and drawn our dreams and nightmares both real and imagined. We’ve been covering all these areas and more for over 25 years and we’re just getting warmed up.

Issue 37

world war 3 illustrated #37: unnatural disasters

Edited by Rebecca Migdal, Tom Keough, Nicole Schulman and Seth Tobocman. 104 pages. Available in finer book and record stores, or through Top Shelf’s online catalogue.

What do New Orleans and Baghdad have in common? One, a victim of Hurricane Katrina; a “natural disaster” caused by Global Warming and governmental neglect. The other a city ravaged by an unnecessary war fueled by corporate greed and our addiction to oil. The radical artists of World War 3 Illustrated take on these issues of man-made disasters, and what hope we have to stop the cycles of violence and environmental destruction.

With contributions by: James Romberger, Art Speigelman, Sabrina Jones, Seth Tobocman, Penny Allen, Mac McGill and many more.

This is not your average comic book. Included in this issue:

Part II of “War Is Hell”, a 4-page comic created in collaboration with a US Army Sergeant in Iraq. The story is told through a series of exclusive photographs and video stills taken by soldiers in the war. This is a must see for all Americans as we continue to pay for this bloody war with our tax dollars.

“Agent Alpha” by Rebecca Migdal gives an in-depth look at the US military’s use of depleted uranium weapons. This is one of the most serious environmental problems of our age and a major breach of international law. These weapons are causing intense suffering to the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, the former Yugoslavia, the US soldiers ordered to transport or use them and to the families of those soldiers.

First hand accounts by Christopher Cardinale and Seth Tobocman who traveled to New Orleans and worked with the organization Common Ground in the lower ninth ward.

Also stories of alternative fuel sources, South Korean farmers facing eviction by the US military and the question of our time: what is Global Warming exactly.

WW3 has been a collectively run, self funded publication since 1980 and has produced the best hard hitting, independent comics in the U.S.

Issue 38

world war 3 illustrated #38 facts on the ground

The best of socially conscious comix for 27 years, World War 3 Illustrated is better than ever!

This issue is jammed with true life tales illustrated by a roll call of legends, with cover art by Peter Kuper and inside covers by Nicole Schulman and Christopher Cardinale. A big 104 pages, 8 of them in full color, WW3 is still only $5.00, and is available in finer book and record stores, or through Top Shelf’s online catalogue.

Edited by Schulman, Cardinale, Seth Tobocman and Rebecca Migdal, the issue features the amazing Kyle Baker, Mumia Abu Jamal, Mac McGill, Fly, James Sherman and Susan Simensky.

The thematic lodestone of this issue is Kuper’s journal of life in Oaxaca, penned during the brutal clash there between military police and striking teachers, that claimed the lives of a number of protesters, and of New York IndyMedia journalist Brad Will. Kuper’s lush, colorful narrative maintains a deft tension, juxtaposing simmering outrage with shimmering poetics. A WW3 tribute to Will accompanies the piece.

Other “Facts on the Ground” accounts take place in Iraq, New Orleans, Coney Island and El Salvador, and address endless war, the worldwide land grab, lingering apartheid, immigrants’ rights and more.

Published by a collective of artists dedicated to battling injustice and institutionalized violence, pens and paintbrushes flaming, World War 3 Illustrated continues a tradition of giving voice to those whose voices have been silenced or drowned out. WW3 is today’s antidote to the consensus of denial that cripples the mainstream media’s capacity for truth. Don’t miss this slammin’ new issue!
